Five simple ways to protect your rest

Rest isn't a luxury — it's how we come back to ourselves. A few small, kind practices to weave more calm into your week.

Five simple ways to protect your rest

In a world that prizes doing, rest can feel almost rebellious. Yet true rest is what allows us to think clearly, feel deeply and show up as ourselves. Here are five gentle practices I return to again and again.

1. Let mornings begin slowly

Before reaching for your phone, take three slow breaths and notice the light in the room. A soft start ripples through the whole day.

2. Make space for silence

Even a few quiet minutes with no input — no podcast, no scrolling — gives the nervous system room to settle.

3. Move without a goal

A slow walk with no step count. Gentle stretching for its own sake. Movement that isn't trying to achieve anything is its own kind of rest.

4. Let sound hold you

Whether it's a gong bath, birdsong, or a favourite piece of music, let yourself be carried rather than always steering.

5. Honour your evenings

Dim the lights an hour before bed and let your body understand that the day is complete. Rest begins long before sleep does.
